Our Lady of the Elms Freshmen Excel in Akron-Summit Council on Holocaust and Genocide Education Contest
Freshman students from Our Lady of the Elms School have garnered recognition in the annual writing and art contest hosted by the Akron-Summit Council on Holocaust and Genocide Education.
Supported by the City of Akron and the Akron-Summit County Library, the contest requires participants to create entries that are not only creative but also grounded in historical accuracy. Entries in both fiction and art categories must include works cited pages to validate their historical context.
Three freshmen from Our Lady of the Elms distinguished themselves:
Emma Roke secured Third Place in Division II Creative Writing.
Reshika Tamang claimed Fourth Place in Division II Creative Writing.
Ximena Villalpando (Oliver) earned an Honorable Mention in Division II Visual Arts.
To celebrate their achievements, students who placed first through fourth are slated to attend a special field trip and luncheon at the Maltz Museum on Friday, April 12.
The Akron-Summit Council on Holocaust and Genocide Education has also scheduled an awards ceremony and Holocaust Commemoration at the main branch library on Tuesday, May 7, at 6:00 PM. The ceremony is open to the public, providing an opportunity for community members to join in celebrating the students' accomplishments.
In addition to the awards ceremony, the winning entries will be showcased at the Akron-Summit County Library from April 15 through May 10, offering the community a chance to appreciate the talent and effort put forth by Our Lady of the Elms students.
Our Lady of the Elms expresses immense pride in Emma, Reshika, Ximena, and all students who participated in this year's contest. Their commitment to historical accuracy and creative expression reflects the school's dedication to fostering well-rounded, informed individuals.
